Policy Regarding Commercial Support/Conflict Of Interest

 

It shall be the policy of OrthoEd to:

 

  1. Avoid recommending or mentioning any specific product by its trade name. When reference is made to a specific product by its trade name, reference shall also be made to competitive products as well.
  2. Program topic selection shall be based upon a perceived need for professional education and not for the purpose of endorsing specific commercial drugs, products, treatments or services.
  3. Funds received from commercial sources in support of any of OrthoEd educational programs shall be unrestricted in that OrthoEd shall retain exclusive rights regarding the selection of lecturer/author, instructional materials, program content, etc.
  4. Any or all commercial support received shall be acknowledged in writing in program announcements, brochures, etc.
  5. Commercial support shall be limited to:
    1. the payment of reasonable honoraria; reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for lecturer/author;
    2. the payment of the cost of modest meals or social events held as part of an educational activity and;
    3. documentation of fund expenditures for specific programs shall be maintained both by OrthoEd and any commercial sources of said funds; each shall render a report to the other regarding such expenditures.
  6. To disclose if any course instructor has a financial and/or beneficial interest in any product or services related to their presentation. A conflict of interest may be considered to exist if a continuing dental education speaker is affiliated with, or has a financial interest in any organization(s) that may be co-supporting a course or may have a direct interest in the subject matter of the presentation. The intent of this policy is not to prevent a speaker with an affiliation or financial interest from making a presentation. It is intended that any potential conflict be identified openly so that the attendees have the full disclosure of the facts and may form their own judgments about the presentation. Financial and/or beneficial interest will be noted in theOnsite Programwith an asterisk (*) placed by the participant’s name and will be announced onsite during introductory remarks to the attendees. In compliance with this policy, participants are required to select one of the following:
    1. I, the undersigned, declare that neither I nor any member of my family have a financial arrangement or affiliation with any corporate organization offering financial support or grant monies for this continuing dental education program, nor do I have a financial interest in any commercial product(s) or service(s) I will discuss in the presentation.
    2. I, the undersigned, (or an immediate family member), have a financial interest/arrangement or affiliation with the corporate organization offering financial support or grant monies for this continuing dental education program, or I do have a financial interest in any commercial product(s) or services I will discuss in the presentation.

Having an interest in or an affiliation with a corporate organization does not necessarily prevent a speaker from making a presentation, but the relationship must be made known to the audience. Failure to disclose or a false disclosure will require OrthoEdto remove a speaker from the program and to identify a replacement.

 

Potential Risks of Limited Knowledge

 

All OrthoEd courses are designed to provide sound scientific and clinical information. Some courses include an on-site/in-office participation course with practical applications on animal bones, simulated typodonts, and observing live patient treatment. It is important to understand that there are potential risks of using limited knowledge when incorporating new techniques and procedures into clinical practice. All participants should insure that they have sufficient knowledge and skills before applying any new treatment on their patients.

 

Speaker Selection Guidelines

 

Any potential speaker for OrthoEd must meet the following criteria:

 

  1. The speaker must submit a Curriculum Vita.
  2. The speaker must have spoken at least one time at a major scientific meeting after completing dental school or their residency.
  3. The speaker must have at least one peer-reviewed scientific journal article or book chapter published and said publication must be submitted to
  4. Before their first OrthoEd presentation, the speaker must provide a sample presentation.
  5. Before their first OrthoEd presentation, the speaker must provide an outline of said presentation.

Speaker Instructions

 

The following are instructions to speakers who will present for OrthoEd:

 

  1. Every presentation must provide, at a minimum, a brief review of the literature. This is to include the current state of the art, and alternative procedures with references as appropriate.
  2. Every presentation must provide a course manual. If a formal manual is not available, a PDF copy of the slides are to be made available to participants.
  3. Every presentation must include scientific evidence/peer-reviewed journals and evidence-based procedures.
  4. Every presentation should avoid recommending or mentioning any specific product by its trade name. When reference is made to a specific product by its trade name, reference shall also be made to competitive products as well.
  5. Every presentation requires that the enhancement, modification, or alteration of photographs, computer images, radiographic images or other visual images be disclosed to attendees. Visual enhancement will be noted in the Onsite Program with a camera symbol ()placed by the presenter’s name and will be announced onsite during introductory remarks to the attendees.
  6. Any honoraria and/or travel expenses will be established in the individual Instructor Agreement. In general, OrthoEd will cover the cost of a coach class round-trip airline ticket, hotel room stay at the headquarter hotel the night before the presentation and the night of the presentation if a return flight is not available the same day, and reasonable meal expenses for the same duration. Receipts are required for all expenses and must be submitted within 30 days of presentation completion. Reimbursement will be processed within 30 days of receipt.
